M808A Microphone/Instrument/Line Preamplifier

Microphones: Coles 4038 Ribbon Microphones (Matched Set).

Stereo Pair on Overheads.

Channel One: Pentode Mode, Phase Out, Pad Out, 600Ω, GAIN on 30, and Attenuate on 9.

Channel Two: Pentode Mode, Phase Out, Pad Out, 600Ω, GAIN on 30, and Attenuate on 9.


Microphone: AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon Microphone.

Channel One: Pentode Mode, Phase Out, Pad Out, 600Ω, GAIN on 50, and Attenuate on 0.

Channel Two: Pentode Mode, Phase Out, Pad Out, 600Ω, GAIN on 50, and Attenuate on 0.


Mike Avenaim and Brogan Dutcher record with one microphone on the drum kit into the M808A, and the Bass guitar into the M808A’s D.I.

Microphone Placement/Settings: Stam FET47. Crotch position, Triode Mode, Gain knob on 40, Attenuate knob on 13, 600Ω, -20db Pad Off.

Bass DI Setting: Pentode Mode, Gain knob on 100, Attenuate knob on 0,

The bass fuzz comes straight from the M808A. (With the gain knob on maximum setting + Pentode mode highest gain setting).

Some compression was added to the Drum microphone in Pro Tools for more OOMF!

Channel One: Triode Mode, Phase Out, Pad Out, 600Ω, GAIN on 50, and Attenuate on 10.5.

Channel Two: Triode Mode, Phase Out, Pad Out, 600Ω, 50Hz Filter, GAIN on 50, and Attenuate on 9.75.

Colin Woodford recorded some short demos at his home studio on his handmade drum set. Behind his big sound in this clip is only a pair of matched Neumann Gefell M582 tube microphones going straight through the M808A Preamp.


This is the raw track and no EQ, Compression, or any effect was used for a true frame of reference.

Adam Grab plays a 1964 Fender Jazz Bass through the M808A Preamp.

DIRECT IN, Recorded using an Apollo Twin (line level, no gain), into Logic Pro.

Mason & Hamlin Grand Piano: recorded stereo with the preamp mic inputs, 48v using two AKG-214 condenser mics
Fender Strat Electric Guitar: recorded mono with the preamp mic input, Fender Twin Reverb miced with a single Shure SM57, double-tracked

The final track is only minimally mixed and transparently mastered.
